The Party

The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) is a social democratic party that believes in human dignity and the equality of all people irrespective of gender, ethnicity, origin, faith, social, economic, cultural, political and other differences.

GDC is committed to the principles of a just society characterised by strengthening peaceful co-existence, freedom, responsibility and meaningful participation of all persons in national affairs. GDC is fully committed to the principles of democracy, good governance, the rule of law and respect for human rights and freedoms as well as the protection of these essential values and their constant adaptation to the changing needs of our modern times and society.

GDC is inspired by a vision of The Gambia as a highly developed, harmonious and successful nation with a happy and united population enjoying a high standard of living. To realise this vision, GDC commits itself to the development of a highly skilled and motivated workforce as well as the pursuit of justice and equality of opportunities for all persons including women, youth and Gambians in the diaspora.

GDC recognises that human dignity and freedom in a democratic system require that all citizens have full access to opportunities and information concerning the policies, leadership and public affairs of elected officials. Equally important, citizens must have the opportunity to participate in open and public assessment of such a system and to change or modify such policies and leadership as they deem necessary for the well-being of all Gambians. In this regard, GDC is determined to provide a flexible and democratic structure whereby all Gambians obtain information, participate in such assessment and to have influence for any reforms through open communications, free dialogue and participatory action in both electoral and non-electoral processes. Subject to the provisions of the constitution and any other laws of The Gambia, the provisions of this constitution shall be supreme in the governance of the affairs of the Party.

However, provided that where any rule, regulation or any other enactment of the Party is inconsistent with the provisions of the constitution of The Gambia, such a rule, regulation and enactment shall, to the extent of its inconsistency, be null and void and of no effect whatsoever. In order to achieve a more effective governance of the GDC and the promotion of its ideals, aims and objectives, the Party hereby adopts this amended constitution onto itself. This constitution sets forth the institutions, systems, processes and procedures by which GDC, in co-operation with its Party organs, works to organise its affairs and implement its aims and objectives on behalf of all its members.
